You may have heard of patriotism but have you really understood what this word meant? Probably, you know more about how to buy Instagram followers and social media stuff than being patriotic. This is not a hit on you because after all, it is mainstream in all forms of media.
Basically, patriotism is about showing feeling of love and compassion for your country. “Patriotic” is how patriotism can be demonstrated and among the stereotype of being a good citizen. On the other hand, like many other well-intentioned things, it may be harmful if it is taken to the extremes. Together with love, patriotism also invokes the feeling of devotion, attachment and pride to the homeland. Not to mention, attachment as well to others who are patriotic in their country.
These feelings of attachments might be brought by factors such as culture, race or ethnicity, history or religious beliefs.

As a matter of fact, there are numerous ways on how to show patriotism like for example, standing up when the National Anthem is played, reciting Pledge of Alliance and so forth. Perhaps the most important act of patriotism, especially in the US are those that are celebrating the country and making it stronger. Some of these include:
- Taking part in representative democracy by signing up to vote and vote in elections

Difference between Patriotism vs. Nationalism
While nationalism and patriotism were considered synonyms for once, they have different connotations actually. While both are showing feelings of love for their country, the values on which these feelings are based would be different.
This is because the feeling of patriotism are focused on positive values that the country embraces similar to justice, equality and freedom while in nationalism, feelings are more on the belief that their country is superior among others. This can lead to having assumptions that other countries are their enemy while patriots may see other countries as their allies.
