Video game players spend a lot of time playing on gaming consoles or PCs, yet it turns out that many tend to develop political awareness through the exercise. Consider this, if all gamers are a dumb lot, why will the military even think of recruiting them?
Gamers are inclined to form community groups in the lobbies of their favorite online game, or at Twitch and Reddit. Discussions can cover anything; not only about gaming-related topics but also real time information on current events as they happen in their respective country or community.
So even if Statista’s 2019 reports state that video game players ranging between ages 15 and 19 spend 64 minutes playing on their PCs or consoles on an average weekday, they also engage in discussions about the political, social and economic aspects of the game content. In some ways, some even get to understand when a political concept is right or left leaning.
Why Reddit’s Gaming Discussions Can Also be Informative
While many ordinarily ask for advice about a computer component or accessory that is better suited for gaming, such questions elicit useful and meaningful responses from gamers who use Reddit’s discussion forums. Here, a gamer once asked about the best panel for gaming reddit responses even included comprehensive explanations coming from gaming solutions provider NVIDIA.
Most gamers know about LCD monitors but do not necessarily have knowledge about gaming panels. As a form of response, NVIDIA came out with a Reddit article explaining about LCD monitors and the different types of flat panels of liquid crystal which the LCD acronym stands for: Liquid Crystal Display.
Apparently, business organizations also benefit from Reddit’s discussion groups, posing as excellent sources of feedback. They then collect such information as useful data in monitoring product performance, or when making a baseline study for a future project.
While not a few video game players also have sub-community discussion groups at Twitch or Facebook, a serious discussion can at times be reactionary. One example are the rants against representations of feminists or LGBT in multiplayer games.
Twitch though, does not allow hateful conduct and comments. The streaming platform demonstrated this by suspending Donald Trump’s account for streaming campaign speeches with disparaging messages, such as those describing Mexican immigrants as drug dealers, criminals and rapists.
As opposed to Facebook, where even FB employees complained about CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s refusal to take action against Trump, when he uploaded his “When the looting starts, the shooting starts” broadcast.
To most serious gamers, all things matter, which is why the U.S. military is using massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) as tools for recruiting American youths.Community Group Discussions, Political Awareness, Video Gaming
