The Amma Vodi scheme is the campaign promise of the YS Reddy Congress Party (YSRCP), which focuses mainly on making sure that in Andhra Pradesh (AP), every child attends school and that no one has a reason to drop out. The scheme is part of the Manifesto of the YSRCP, the party founded by current AP Chief Minister Jagan Mohan (JM) Reddy, son of the former AP Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
After assuming office in May 2019, Chief Minister JM Reddy immediately set the wheels of the Amma Vodi scheme rolling, starting with the presentation of the budget for 2019-20, The education sector received a substantial allocation for the Amma Vodi project, which includes a commitment to give Rs 15000 per year to eligible Andhra Pradesh mothers who will enroll their children in a school.
Mechanics of the Amma Vodi Scheme
The amount is allocated under the “Promoting the Literacy” section of the state budget. The allocation intends to fully fund the promise of providing financial assistance to support the school attendance of children between ages 6 to 14, as well as those attending intermediate schools.
In his review of the current conditions of education in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister JM Reddy found out that the increasing number of school dropouts were family initiated. Children are being compelled by their families to stop attending school due to lack of money.
Through the Amma Vodi Scheme, eligible mothers of Andhra Pradesh, regardless of caste, will be issued a government check for Rs.15000 every year. The financial support is expected to allow mothers to let their children attend and finish school. Originally, the scheme intended to fund only up to high school; but Chief Minister JM Reddy later ordered the education ministry to extend the financial assistance to students enrolled in intermediate education.
In time with the school opening last June 2019, Chief Minister JM Reddy instructed the Ministry of Education to hold a 3-day celebration called the “Rajanna Badibata Program” to officially launch the Amma Vodi Scheme. During the program officiated by AP Minister of Education Adimulapu Suresh, it was clarified that the Rs 15000 yearly financial support will be awarded by the state starting January 26, 2020.
