There are only a few days left before the next big installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) hits the theaters. Unlike any other feature movies in the MCU, “Captain Marvel” is considered as a game-changer by the Marvel fans, being the first MCU film to showcase a solo female superhero.
While many fans have waited for so long to see Captain Marvel on the big screen, there are some people who seem to be not quite happy with her arrival. The reason for their lack of enthusiasm is the issue that the movie will be all too political. Fanboys are not happy with how “Captain Marvel” has been promoted for the past couple of months due to its underlying political agenda, which is obviously centered on feminism. However, should politics get in the way of people enjoying a quality movie? Is it actually the politics that bother the viewers, or is it their deep-rooted personal beliefs and issues that are challenged?
Why ‘Captain Marvel’ Suddenly Become The Least Anticipated MCU Film?
If you have been following Rotten Tomatoes (RT) for the early reviews of upcoming movies, you might have already seen the “Want-to-See” rating of “Captain Marvel” plummeting from 100% to a tragic 27%. The reason behind this is the huge number of online trolls giving a negative rating on the movie, and fortunately RT saw through these trolls’ agenda and made the rating hidden. To be clear, this is not yet the critics’ score for the actual film, but only the rating given by the viewers if they are interested to watch it.
Even without asking all those RT trolls about their reasoning for giving “Captain Marvel” a thumbs down before watching the film, the reaction of some people is already evident regarding the movie’s theme. Judging by the trailers, you can say that “Captain Marvel” advocates for women empowerment. The fact that it is the first solo female superhero movie in MCU is a message in itself. It is also very well-known that actress Brie Larson, who bagged the titular character, is vocal about her political stand, especially about the lack of female representation in Hollywood.
The fanboys do not appear to be fine with how “Captain Marvel” is shaping up to be. According to some MCU fans, they do not need a preachy protest movie that calls out all the wrong in the world. Although, what appears to be the real reason for them not liking the movie is the central theme itself, which is feminism. It is also worth noting that Larson wants to see a more inclusive press panel for the movie, as she thinks that the previous movie press cons have been all white males. For the MCU fanbase that is predominantly male, this kind of ideas and statements already sounds like an attack to their very existence. Thus, the backlash ensues.
So ‘Captain Marvel’ Is All For Feminism, But Should We Frown On That?
Even without the political correctness that some people are sensitive of, we can expect the same intense action sequences from “Captain Marvel,” as every other films from the MCU had given us. From the trailer itself, we can see Larson’s character soaring high in the sky as she singlehandedly obliterate what appears to be an enemy spacecraft that is inflitrating Earth’s atmosphere. No one knows where that spaceship will crash, but hopefully it won’t end up crashing down a residential area or else we will a good roofing company fort worth to fix the damages.
If the cast and crew of “Captain Marvel” wants to give women a time to shine, why should we be angry about it? For a typical guy who always hears the call for woman finally getting recognition and be seen as equal of a man, the message can be sort of annoying. We can only imagine how the trailers made the fanboys’ blood boil. However, it is not the film’s intention to discredit anybody steal anything from one gender and place them to another.
Lastly, whether we like it or not, everything around us can be political. Not only movies and television series have a history of injecting a dose of politics to their contents, as most video games today also have huge political setting built around them.
